shades of gray art
Lynn Gray
artist
As a surface design and textile artist, my art quilts are not meant to sleep under. They’re about giving life meaning. In my imagery, I often start with a concept, find something I wish to explain or understand, then set parameters around that. Within each genuine and authentic art quilt, I often incorporate up-cycled and recycled textiles, hand painted and dyed fabrics. I also include vintage materials, which have witnessed the passing of many years. It is the textural fabric and fibre I incorporate which often give viewers the entry point to my work.

As an artist, I witness the Comox Valley in my own way – addressing historical architecture, my family roots, natural elements - the mountains, forests and ocean – and interpreting those elements in textiles and fiber, acrylics and mixed media.
Born in Comox, I spent my formative years in Campbell River and on Quadra Island. I studied Drawing and Painting, Textile Design and Graphics at UBC and completed my graduate work at SFU. After a 34 year Art Education teaching career in the BC Public System, I returned to my roots, and relocated to the Comox Valley in December 2012.

I’m interested in how artists tell their stories through personal imagery, and I’m inspired to visually express my own life stories. Sharing emotional stories about celebrations, successes, tragedies, excitement, sadness, and everything in between is part of my journey.

We all love a good story, and as an artist, whether I realize it or not, I am a storyteller. Countless stories are within me, and I share these unique expressions through my textile art quilts, painting and print making.
