ART
OF FLYFISHING
A balance between art and science: the ancient piscatorial art of flyfishing is a past time with a mystical reverence. Learning to catch a trout or salmon on the fly is a complex process with spiritual connections to the rivers, lakes and beaches of Vancouver Island.
Fooling fish with feathers seems ridiculously simple, but isn’t. The discipline takes energy to master: tying each precise fly to match the hatch, landing a cast without a splash, retrieving the line with a gossamer-thin tippet and perfect timing. Grateful for my incredible mentors who share their secrets of the water, how to read streams and beaches, tread them lightly and intuit the mysterious nature of the wild trout.
Art
of flyfishing
It’s gorgeous, almost surreal when the trout surges and runs, then leaps with a silver shower of water. Our atavistic selves relish the hunt – it’s in our nature, but two generations raised on conservation ethics are releasing fish to reproduce. We understand the need to protect what we cherish.
